Customs Duties and Taxes in the United States
Several duties-related things to be aware of are:
·
Customs fees are
calculated after a shipment reaches the port of entry. A customs office close
to the port is usually the place to do this. Duties and taxes will be included
as a separate item on your invoice.
·
Shipments must
clear customs and pay any applicable duties when they arrive at a port of
entry. Your shipment may be held until the outstanding duties are paid in full
or an acceptable form of security is provided (such as a cash deposit or
irrevocable letter of credit).
·
The duty you pay
is determined by the nature and value of the imported goods, as well as their
country of origin.
·
Additional state
and local taxes and fees may be due in addition to any federal obligations.
· Customs duties are not uniform and change with each product category and place of origin.
