As the off-season approaches, a power shortage slows Chinese manufacturing, and speculators hurry to sell their stockpiled shipping places, the Shipping from China to US Cost plummeted this week after reaching record highs in early September.

Many long-term prices for shipping a 40-foot container from China to the United States are published on the Shanghai Shipping Exchange for around $5,000, which is significantly less than spot rates. The drop-in spot shipping prices is primarily due to the approaching off-season and a fall in manufacturing due to China's continuous power shortage.

Several provinces in China have halted manufacturing activity to alleviate energy shortages or satisfy the central government's energy consumption reduction targets. Scalpers abandoned their stockpiled container places when production limits were introduced.

The outlook for shipping prices in the foreseeable future is divided among experts. Shipping costs will remain reasonably high in the next two weeks as U.S. ports remain crowded and the supply-demand imbalance remains substantial.
